Best before dates - lentils etc.

My mum has given me a tub full of bits of lentils, split peas, broth mixture etc. The best before dates on some are 2010, which doesn't bother me (especially unopened) but the split peas are BBE 2006! And some lentils in a tub that have no packaging but I assume are around the same.

Would you eat them? They'll only be going in stews anyway or are they only good for making noisy toys with?

If they're unopened I'd eat them, if not I think I'd keep them for toys, crafts etc.

I think they would be fine to eat but dried stuff tends to get a bit tough after a year or so. I'd save the older ones for rainsticks or collages personally.

On further inspection, there's only one unopened pack that's 2006, and one with 2010 on. Will do a test run on them both tomorrow, before deciding whether to chuck them in my next soup or not.

As for all the random bits - rain stick! Or stick them in a tub and save them for crafty things when she's a bit older (they'd just end up all over the floor at the moment ) as what difference is a few more months going to make?!

Rainstick now and then you can still make the choice to use them for crafts later by opening the rain stick

Well I put them all into a tub, and gave her some jugs and other containers to do some pouring with. I dug out our BLW shower curtain which helped with the clean up!

She spent ages transferring everything between containers, with both a wooden spoon and a dessert spoon and was doing really well with the pouring. Then she found out it was much more fun to pour it all over herself

And now all back in the tub for another day! Thinking of doing a rain stick, but I fancy getting her to help decorate the tube and I haven't worked out what to do yet.

If you are brave, glue and glitter!! Less brave, paint, feathers, stickers etc.
