Thread: New "Post Likes" system now active!

The new, improved, public post likes system is now up and running... hopefully free from bugs! A few things to note:

1) The like button has moved. It's now at the bottom of each post, next to "reply", "quote" etc.



2) Likes are now public. When you like a post, your name appears in a box under that post.



3) Posts liked under the old system will retain their rating (shown next to the like button), but for the sake of privacy (as some people might not want which posts they have rated in the past to be made public), the "name box" will not appear on old posts.


As always... report any weirdness or things that you don't think should be happening here... and enjoy!

In the announcement bit of the sidebar the link doesn't work for this thread. How long has that announcement box been there? I've never noticed it before.

It should still add 1 point to rep per like, as before. Just tested that on your post and it seems to be working fine .

I managed to mess up the announcement 3 or 4 times, I was hoping no one had noticed . The announcement box is new just for this, though I guess it could come in handy for other things too.

OK just so you know, the likes on TBJ mobile are still showing the number instead of the name (not really a major issue, just thought I would point it out in case you don't know) Also, while I am on the subject, when i like a post on the mobile version, it takes me back to the start of the thread, is that out of your hands? And again, while i am at it, can we get the posts at the side (on the full forum computer version)to takeus to our last unread post instead of the start of the thread like it does on tbj mobile?

I'm sure you know on the tapatalk app there's no like option at all. Not that that bothers me or anything.

Ahh I'd forgotten about that - it shouldn't really have the old likes system on mobile, as those likes are still anonymous, so it'll be removed for the time being. I was actually wondering why a couple of random "old style" number likes had appeared - this explains it! .

Getting the new system onto TBJ mobile might take some tinkering, too, so it might mean no likes on TBJ mobile for a while . The jumping back to the top thing is due to browser limitations, most (possibly all? Not sure about the "newest" smartphones capabilities) phone browsers aren't capable of rendering the code in the same way that up-to-date PCs do. In more specific geekery terms;

Likes use a browser/code function called AJAX which, put simply, is what allows new things to pop into existence on a page that's already loaded (e.g. the like box, names in that box, etc.). Older browsers and mobile browsers aren't AJAX compatible, and therefore, when you like a post they have to reload the entire page to reflect the change. That's why it jumps back to the start, because the page has reloaded.

Tapatalk is a 3rd-party app that simply has access to the TBJ database for posts etc., it doesn't actually use any code from the site itself so unfortunately it's impossible to have tapatalk likes, unless the people who make tapatalk build it into their own software.

Should be all sorted now, TBJ mobile like button will create a new non-anonymous like and should be showing likes under posts now too . Not actually tested this on a phone yet, only using the mobile version on PC, so if there are any problems let me know.
